Day #26 – Canals of the Jordaan

The Jordaan area is one of the most loved areas in Amsterdam and for good reason. It’s picturesque canals, skinny streets and weekend farmers market, make it a favourite among locals, expats and tourists alike. I absolutely love the Saturday Noordermarkt! Fresh organic vegetables, bakeries and specialty food stalls are open selling the freshest produce around. I bought some incredible wild mushrooms for a rustic risotto dish on the menu tonight. The market was too busy to sneak a good photo in, so instead I captured this beautiful Jordaan canal on my walk home.

Day #25 – A healthy roast dinner

20131028-111916.jpg

After a long, cold afternoon of travelling to and from Den Haag which included running from the train station to make an appointment on time after my train had been cancelled, I couldn’t think of a better way to end my week than with a comforting yet healthy roast.

Who doesn’t love a roast dinner? It was my first time cooking a roast chicken and it turned out perfect! Taking hints from Jamie Oliver, my roast chicken was served with a healthy portion of roast root vegetables including sweet potato, carrots, baby onions and garlic! Yum!

Day #24 – Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum was looking particularly grand today as I ran past on my way to the Albert Cuyp markets to pick up some fresh fruit and vegetables for dinner. Absolutely loving the perfect blue sky and feeling thankful for the beautiful Autumn weather this week.

Day #23 – Amsterdamse Bos

Instead of a run today, I opted to take my good friend on a 18KM (round trip) bike ride out to the Amsterdamse Bos, a big forest near the south of Amsterdam.

It is such a beautiful ride, and a little treat for the day was a trip to Boerderij Meerzicht, a HUGE Dutch pancake house hidden away in the middle of the forest. I opted for a less indulgent pancake option, sticking to the classic lemon and icing sugar, but that’s not to say I wouldn’t have loved to devour the cherry and nutella pancake on the menu. Day #22 – Vondelpark in 24 minutes!

20131025-113412.jpg

To set myself a benchmark and a time to beat, I timed how long it took me to run a full lap of Vondelpark. Result – 24 minutes almost on the dot… (I now forget how many seconds). I’m pretty happy with this time but know I can beat it and WILL beat it before the challenge is up!

I took this great shot of the Westermarkt from the bridge near my house, on the way back from the park! It was surprisingly hot that Tuesday afternoon so hopefully the nice weather stays all week.

Day #21 – 10 days to go!

20131024-091246.jpg

It’s Monday and only 10 days let of the challenge. I’m amping things up with week, making sure I complete an intense run (or other high intensity exercise) everyday. I’m off to a great start, completing a 6KM run along the Amstel river and snapping this beautiful shot of the Autumn trees on my way back along the Prinsengracht!

Bring on Tuesday!

Day #20 – Noord

20131023-150220.jpg

Day 20 of my Amsterdam October Challenge I venture over to the North (or Noord) of Amsterdam. It’s overwhelming how much water is in Amsterdam and a beautiful contrast with the industrial buildings of the North side of the city. The stunning EYE film museum certainly stands grandly with it’s sharp architectural edges and white colouring. A great way to end my weekend 🙂
